The general meaning of “recycling” with definition of EU-legislation is “the reprocessing in a production process of waste materials for their original purpose or for other purposes, but excluding energy recovery”. This strict definition fosters high-quality products, and does imply, that not every output process stream is accepted as a „product“, but classified as waste. These rules and requirements have been precised specifically for batteries by EU Regulation No 493/2012. It defines the benchmark „RE“, where RE stands for recycling efficiency and expresses the proportion of accepted products in relation to input battery weight.

To enable minimum quality standards for battery recycling at a level playing field within EU market, battery directive has set targets for different battery types (Annex III Part B):

Lead acid batteries RE > 65%

Nickel-Cadmium batteries RE > 75%

Other batteries and accumulators RE > 50%

In most recycling companies, RE is not credible to trace and calculate based on yearly input - ouput balance. Therefore Accurec has decided to aggregate this RE - number by accredited audit of the individual battery process. This professional audit investigates methodically the operation by batch treatment and documentation. Although audit cost are high, this proceeding saves money and time long term, because its determined RE-number is valid until technical changes of recycling process are made.

Due to its unique technology developed and applied, Accurec exceeds all requested minimum RE targets. The audit has been conducted for NiCd-batteries, confirming a high ranking recycling efficiency of 79%.
